HMP & YOI Doncaster was the first prison to achieve registration under ISO14001. Since achieving this milestone we have improved on our environmental performance in the following ways:

Two of our staff have passed the Diploma in Environmental Management offered by the British Safety Council. As a result of which they have also achieved associate membership status of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

In association with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust we have developed a 10-year plan for conserving and managing the rich biodiversity of the island upon which the prison stands. This includes making and fixing of bird and bat boxes and planting where applicable specific plant types to encourage wildlife.

As a move towards sustainability we are in the process of calculating our environmental footprint. This will assist us in the future by giving us a baseline against which to monitor our future environmental performance.

In order to improve upon our prisoner-recycling programme we have, working with Urban Mines, carried out an audit of our waste streams. Urban Mines have also assisted us by locating local companies who will take our waste products for recycling. We prefer to use local companies wherever possible for our waste disposal in preference to using national companies, many of which use road transport to transfer waste many miles prior to recycle it.
