Daily life in prison

GDA758-19042013-A5-124At HMP & YOI Doncaster our aim is to involve prisoners in work, learning, developing skills and activities. This is to give them opportunities to:

  • Enhance their self-esteem
  • Improve their health and wellbeing
  • Increase their chances of successfully settling back into the community following release

Prisoners are out of their cells while they are in:

  • Work
  • Education
  • Exercise
  • Association (time for phone calls, showers, library and available wing activities such as pool tables)
  • Meal times
  • Weekends

Prisoners who refuse to work or take part in regime activities will be challenged and this may result in a reduction of their Incentives & Earned Privileges level.

The prison regime gives a clear structure to the prisoner’s day that ensures safe and fair access to facilities for everyone. The daily regime is posted on every wing and every prisoner receives a personal copy.

Food and mealtimes

Mealtimes are an important time of the day for prisoners and the catering team at HMP & YOI Doncaster offer a range of options to suit all prisoners including those with specific dietary requirements.

A regular prisoner forum meets to discuss catering with the catering team. This provides the opportunity for prisoners to give feedback to the staff. Our staff team value all feedback received and, as a result of the prisoner forum input, have been able to make positive changes to prison menus.

According to prisoners, the meals at Doncaster are of a good quality.
