HMP & YOI Doncaster has strong partnerships in place with external organisations to help prisoners to maintain and develop their wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle.
CareUK provides an integrated healthcare service at HMP & YOI Doncaster.
The integrated service includes Primary Care, Mental Health and Substance Misuse.
Healthcare services available to prisoners include;
- GP clinics
- Genitourinary Medicine (GUM)
- Substance Misuse (Clinical and psychosocial interventions)
- Tissue viability
- Pain Management
- Minor ailments (run by Non Medical Prescribers)
Prisoners can self-refer by submitting a Medical Application or be referred by staff within the prison. Medical applications are available on all residential areas.
All offenders are seen and assessed by a nurse when they arrive at the prison. Those prisoners needing healthcare services and / or regular medication will be identified and referred from that initial reception assessment.
CareUK provides healthcare 24 hours a day over 7 days a week.
If friends and family have concerns about a prisoner’s health or wellbeing they should encourage the prisoner to contact the healthcare team or they can put their concerns in writing. If a complaint is made on behalf of a prisoner, the healthcare team will need to obtain the prisoner’s permission before they can respond.
Drug and alcohol services
As part of the arrivals process, all prisoners are assessed for drug and alcohol dependency by qualified medical staff.
Prisoners who need support for drug and / or alcohol dependency are supported and housed on the Stabilisation Unit. Here, medical staff manage their withdrawal and support.
The Substance Misuse Unit (SMU) has 24 hour nursing cover. Doctor’s surgeries, medication and methadone dispensing also take place in this unit.
